A 17th century South German domestic altar with the Mocking of Christ

Wooden corpus with tortoiseshell veneer, parcel gilt silver mountings and a central carved ivory panel. This opulent house altar is thought to have been made in Augsburg using a South German carved ivory panel depicting the Mocking of Christ. The upper section rests on a waisted rectangular plinth and consists of an arched central relief, flanked by pilasters with scrolls on either side. The finials of the stepped architrave formed as flaming hearts and the entire surround is decorated throughout with detailed silver scroll reliefs over tortoiseshell veneer.
The ivory slightly yellowed. The silver tarnished, losses to the gold leaf. With minor wear. 40.5 x 21.5 x 7 cm.
