Franconia around 1490/1500

A Franconian carved limewood figure of the Virgin and Child, circa 1490/1500

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and deeply hollowed out. With remnants of former polychromy.. A figure of the Virgin designed for a frontal viewpoint. She is depicted standing in contrapposto with Her torso leant far back, holding the nude Christ Child in Her left hand and placing Her extended right foot on the crescent moon before Her. The composition and rendering of this finely carved work, especially the facial features, display strong stylistic parallels to the work of the Nuremberg sculptors from the circle of Veit Stoss.
The Child's left hand with the globe and several further smaller losses replaced. Circular cracks in the lower section of the work. Minimal wear throughout. Height 86 cm.
