A late 15th century Bavarian carved limewood figure of Saint Christopher

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. Carved from one block with freestanding elements. The tip of the treestump an older attachment. With extensively overpainted older polychromy. A figure of the saint standing in contrapposto on a shallow plinth, designed for a frontal viewpoint. He holds the blessing Christ Child on his right shoulder and leans on a tree branch in his left hand for support. The artistic and sculptural fineness of this piece is particularly evident in the fact that it was carved from a single block, as well as in the hair and facial features of Saint Christopher and the deeply undercarved elements which add to the figure's three-dimensional quality.
Minimal wear throughout. A small backing to the thinly carved area below Christ's left arm. Height 109 cm.
