A boxwood netsuke of a temple servant cleaning a bell, by Unboku. 18th/19th century

Clad only in a fundoshi, a temple servant cleans a great temple bell with a hefty brush. Due to his small stature he is forced to hold onto the bell’s grommet with one arm while brushing the surface with the other. Very finely carved and polished. Signed Unboku in an oval reserve.
