A Tokyo school boxwood netsuke of Raiden on a drum, by Masatsugu. Mid-19th century
The god of thunder, clad only in a loincloth with two drumsticks stuck in the back, attempting to push the thunder drum through heavy clouds. Very finely carved and polished, the drumheads attached with fine black nails. Signed Hokutosai Masatsugu.
