A boxwood netsuke of an oni with a Daruma doll. Late 18th century

A large oni looking curiously into the Daruma face of a lantern, whilst behind him, a little imp hauls himself out of the damaged lantern and up his left leg. A tiny Daruma doll, like a football, on his foot. Detailed and very finely carved and polished, all the eyes inlaid with black horn. Old crack above the oval himotoshi.
