A Schweinfurt parcel gilt silver beaker

Tapering beaker on a flat base, engraved with scrollwork cartouches. The base engraved with an arms of alliance, the side with a man with the house mark and monogram MH, the side with the woman with the armorials of the Schuler family and monogram MS. The underside engraved "IETZ.EINER.EIM.VIL.GVTE.WORT:GIBT ABER.SEIN.HERTZ.DAVON.WEIS.LAVTER.NICHTS", numbered "2" and dated 1615. H 11.4 cm, weight 154 g.
Marks of Adam Hälbich, c. 1600.

Only one union is known in the Schuler family from the time around 1615 to which the initials MH and MS would fit: Namely the marriage of Michael Höllerich and Margareta Schuler on 8th January 1594. Michael Höllerich's father was a city councillor in Schweinfurt alongside Margareta's father Willibald Schuler from 1576 - 79, which would make a marriage between their two children plausible. Margareta's brother Willibald Schüler married Magdalena Hübner in 1605. An almost identical beaker with the couple's arms of alliance celebrating their union was made by Kilian Gerstner of Schweinfurt.

Literature

For the beaker of Kilian Gerstner cf.: Heller, Ungarische und Siebenbürgische Goldschmiedearbeiten, Munich 2000, p. 123 ff, erroneously attributed to a maker from Siebenbürgen.
