Maasland mid-12th century
A mid-12th century Maasland copper figure of a seated angel
Cast copper engraved, gilt and enamelled decor. A figure of a seated angel cast in the round on a tripod plinth resting on a flat, round base. The polychrome geometric enamel decor of the base and figure are reminiscent of 12th century goldsmith's work in the Maasland region. The drilled holes in the base suggest that the figure once formed the finial of a reliquary chest.
In good condition, only minor wear to the gilding. Height 6.5 cm, diameter of the base 5.5 cm.
