Hildesheim second half 12th century

A Hildesheim bronze dragon candelstick, second half 12th century

Cast bronze with old patina. The base of this tripod candlestick is decorated with stylised dragons beneath a round pommel and a wide, protruding drip pan. The piece displays strong stilistic similarity to a dragon candlestick in the Diözesanmuseum in Münster, which Otto von Falke (op. cit.) published as a Westphalian work dating to around 1200.
Very minor wear and dents. The iron pricket presumably an older replacement. Height 17.2 cm (with pricket).

Provenance

Collection of Dr. Richard von Schnitzler (1855-1938), Cologne. - By descent in family ownership to the present day.
