France late 14th century

A late 14th century French carved ivory diptych

This diptych, connected via two metal hinges, shows the Adoration of the Magi on the left and the Crucifixion on the right with the Virgin Mary and Saint John mourning under the cross. The raised figures are depicted against a plain background beneath a frieze of Gothic tracery within a flat, smooth surround. This finely carved work is a characteristic example of French ivory carving of the Gothic period.
With a vertical crack through the left panel, two pieces reconnected with ivory dowels. In good overall condition. Height 7 cm, width 9.5 cm (when opened).
