Probably Northern France first half 15th century

A carved sandstone figure of the Virgin and Child, probably Northern France, first half 15th century

Carved in the round, the reverse only summarily worked, the lower section slightly flattened. With regularly applied older polychromy. A figure of the crowned Virgin Mary standing in a gently swaying pose designed for a frontal viewpoint. She carries the Christ Child wrapped in a cloth in Her right arm over Her hip, offering Her breast in the manner of the Maria Lactans. The Virgin wears a floor length red gown and a blue cloak which She holds wrapped across Her body, both garments are decorated with a floral pattern. The figure is characterised by the detailed and sculptural treatment of the drapery, whereby the vertical pleats of the lower garment are partially concealed by and flanked on either side by the cascading folds of the Virgin's cloak.
Wear with minor losses to the hems of the robe and to the plinth. Height 73 cm.
