An exquisite Tibetan gilt bronze figure of Maitreya. 17th/18th century

The Buddha of the Future seated in European way (bhadrasana) on a rectangular stepped throne with lotus footrest, the hands held in the gesture of turning the wheel of law (dharmacakra mudra) and holding the stems of lotuses flowering along his shoulders supporting a water vessel (kundika) and a nagakesara blossom. He wears a diaphanous dhoti with beaded jewellery, and he is richly adorned with a tiara, earrings, necklaces and bracelets, all inset with hard-stones. His sensitively modeled facial features, accentuated by cold gold and pigment, give him a gentle welcoming demeanour. Base sealed.
