A Dutch mortar with grotesques

Cast bronze with golden brown patina. Of tapering form with a broad tiered base and a flaring rim. Decorated with two winged grotesques holding a round medallion amid meandering vegetation. With a wide banderole below the rim inscribed in Latin capital letters: “ANNO SALVTIS NOSTRE 1569”. H 15, D 15.3 cm, weight c. 3.6 kg.
Attributed to Willem Wegewart sr., Deventer, 1569.
