A Meissen porcelain dish from the “yellow lion” service

Deep dish decorated with motifs inspired by the Kakiemon style: A tiger, bamboo, prunus sprig and Oriental flowers. Blue crossed swords mark, dreher's mark of Gottfried Lohse, incised 3. H 6, D 35 cm.
Ca. 1737/38.

This bowl was produced in the immediate aftermath of the dinner service for August III, on which work began in January 1734. Since the king also gave away his own porcelain items as diplomatic gifts, the manufactory had to fill the resulting gaps numerous times. For example in an order placed in March 1737 for 29 bowls (Weber, p. 269).

Provenance

Private collection, Palatinate.
