The ancient theatre of Taormina was built in the 2nd century BC. The Berlin-born artist Otto Geleng painted the famous ruins of the theatre, as well as many other motifs from the Sicilian town, numerous times since he moved to Taormina in 1863 and even became mayor of the town from 1872 to 1882.
