Otto Gebler was among the most renowned painters of animals during the 19th century. Although he trained at the Munich academy under Karl Theodor von Pilotys as of 1858, he only adopted the style of his teacher and not his preferred narrative motifs, deciding instead to paint animals and becoming exceedingly successful at it.
