German 2nd half 14th century

A German carved ivory figure of a monk saint, second half 14th century

Carved in the round, minimal remains of former, presumably partial, polychromy. A figure of a bearded saint with a tonsure standing in a gently swaying pose, holding a book in his left hand. The attribute originally depicted in his extended right hand has not survived. He wears a plain, floor-length robe beneath a voluminous cloak, in the detailed play of drapery of which the fine quality of this remarkable small figure's carving becomes immediately obvious.
Wear with losses to the plinth. Discolouration, especially on the reverse. Mounted on a wooden plinth. Height 16.2 cm (without plinth).

Provenance

Auctioned by Sotheby´s, London, 10.12.2004, lot 13. - South German private collection.
