A 15th century German copper reliquary cross
Gilded and enamelled copper and quartz. The eight-lobed base of the cross is inset with a piece of quartz crystal between two enamelled shafts decorated with tendrils. The cross, with its lobed terminals, is also decoated with enamelled quatrefoil motifs on the front. The central reliquary compartment is covered by a pane of glass. The reverse of the cross is engraved with a depiction of the Virgin and can be opened via a hinge in the upper section.
Some wear and abrasions, otherwise in good overall condition. Height 32 cm.
