Burgundy first half 15th century

A Burgundian carved limestone figure of Saint Cecilia, first half 15th century

Carved in the round and very slightly hollowed out on the reverse. Remnants of former polychromy. A finely carved figure of Saint Cecilia standing in an elegant contrapposto pose, designed for a frontal and slightly lowered viewpoint. Her gown falls in long vertical pleats and pools at the level of the plinth, the drapery of the cloak which she wears over her shoulders is also finely observed. She has a fashionable contemporary bonnet covering her head. As she is the patron saint of music, Cecilia is depicted holding a small organ in one hand and playing it with the other with a concentrated facial expression.
Wear with minor losses. With a square indentation on the back for mountings. Height 64.5 cm.

Provenance

West German private ownership.
