Brabant Circa 1470/1480

A carved oak relief of the swooning Virgin, Brabant, circa 1470/1480

The reverse and both sides smoothed down. Minimal remains of former polychromy. This pierced relief originally formed part of a larger depiction of the crucifixion of Christ. It shows the group of mourners beneath the cross, with the swooning Virgin supported on either side by Saint John and a further mourning woman. To the right of this group, we see from behind Mary Magdalene kneeling at the foot of the cross, looking upwards with her arms outstretched in a pleading gesture. The protruding stump of the cross would formerly have supported a separately carved upper section with Christ, whereby the rectangular indentation on the back of the figure of Saint John would have originally propped up the cross of one of the two thieves who were crucified alongside Jesus.
Minimal wear. 36 x 33 x 8 cm.

Provenance

Acquired in 1979 from Julius Böhler art dealership, Munich. - Subsequently in a South German private collection.
