A late 15th century Italian pax with the Virgin enthroned

Silver, silver niello and gilt bronze. This pax has a handle on the reverse and a richly ornamented architectural surround made up of Renaissance motifs terminating in a fish-headed scroll design in the upper section. The exceedingly finely wrought niello, which is accompanied by the inscription “MARIA GRATIA PLENA“ depicts the Virgin enthroned surrounded by adoring angels making music and four kneeling saints. This panel is thought to originate from Florence.
Minimal wear with very minor losses to the niello. Height 15.5 cm. Depth with handle 5 cm.
