A large Meissen porcelain cup with the monogram of the Duke of Holstein-Gottorf

Cylindrical vessel with original saucer. The cup painted with the initials PP for Pavel Petrovich formed from flower garlands and framed by a blue and gold floral surround. The sides of the cup and the saucer with putti on clouds playing with a crown and the Order of Saint Andrew. Blue crossed swords mark with dot. H of cup 7.5, D of saucer 15 cm.
After 1763, decor attributed to Johann George Loehnig.

"The son of the Russian Tsarina Catherine II, Pavel Petrovich (1754 - 1801) succeeded his father, Karl Peter Ulrich von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf, as Duke of Holstein-Gottorf from 1762 - 1773. His father reigned as Tsar Pyotr III Fedorovich for only 186 days before being assassinated during a coup on 9th July 1762. Pavel Petrovich was only declared tsar after the death of his mother, Tsarina Catherine II, in 1796. Like his father, he advocated reforms and state modernisation and, like him, succumbed to an assassination attempt in 1801."
