A dated French mortar

Golden brown cast bronze with natural patina. The five pilasters decorated with palm frond reliefs alternating with motifs of the sun, the French coat-of-arms, a moon, a mascaron and a classical bust. The upper rim engraved “:G:M:" and dated “1583”. H 10, D 14.5 cm, weight c. 2.3 kg. With corresponding pestle. L 19.7 cm.
