A rare Renaissance mortar with grotesques

Golden brown cast bronze with shimmering brown patina. Of squat, ovoid form with a moulded rim. The entire outer surface decorated with grotesque motifs of a male demi-figure and two ram's heads forming a lyre. With twisted pinecone handles. H 8.1, D 11 cm, weight c. 1.3 kg.
France, attributed to Paris or Fontainebleau, late 16th C.
