A sumptuous Münster mortar with hunting decor

Heavy golden brown cast bronze with polished natural patina. Of cylindrical form with a thick, stepped base and slightly flared, protruding rim. Decorated with several bands of moulding, Gothic flowerheads and forest scenes with game and hunting dogs. The display side emblazoned with a large shield monogrammed "I B" and inscribed above "MODERATA DVRANT". With two angular, faceted handles. With minor dents to the interior and losses due to usage to the underside. H 19.7, D 20 cm, weight c. 9.5 kg.
Attributed to the workshop of Bernd Schmedding, late 16th C.
