A museum quality Nuremberg silver tankard
Cylindrical silver gilt tankard with a moulded rim, the solid silver handle formed as a female herm. The outer surface decorated with exceptionally finely chased and engraved Biblical scenes in three oval reserves 1. The creation of Eve, 2. The Annunciation, 3. Christ's Baptism with a contemporary baptism scene in the background, each engraved with the inscriptions "Was hilf das Weben" / "Wenn Christi Leben" / "die Tauff nicht geben" (what does weaving serve when Christ's life does not give baptism). The spaces between the medallions filled with acanthus and depictions of putti at work. The domed lid set with a screw-mounted medallion depicting Christ among the little children, engraved "Laßet die Kindlein Zu mir kommen, u wehret Ihnen nicht, dan Solchen Ist das Reich Gottes. Maru. am 10 Capite." (Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Mark chapter 10). Engraved below the rim with a crest bearing a ducal crown and the Order of the Garter. Height 21.5 cm, weight 1,103 g.
