A Riga parcel gilt silver tankard

Cylindrical tankard with a scroll handle resting on three pomegranate feet. The slightly domed lid surmounted by a finely chased thumbrest formed as a flower bud between two pomegranates. The lid and handle engraved with flowerheads, the display side with an arms of alliance bearing the arms of the von Schultzen family to the heraldic left, monogrammed "AS" and "DM" and dated "Anno 1694". The lid inset with a medal depicting the Swedish King Charles XI avers and Queen Ulrike Leonore revers. H 23.5 cm, weight 1,546 g.
Marks of Andreas Brackfeldt, 1691 - 1697.

Brackfeldt was among the most famous goldsmiths in Riga in the latter half of the 17th century. His works, of which only around ten have survived, are considered particilarly characteristic of the Baroque style in Livland and Kurland. Examples of his few surviving pieces can be found in the Historical Museum in Moscow, the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and in the Cleveland Art Museum.
