Upper Rhine-Region second half 15th century

A carved wood Anna Selbdritt group, Upper Rhine Region, 2nd half 15th century

Carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened and hollowed out. With partially overpainted older polychromy. Depicting Saint Anne sitting on a plinth designed as a hillock. She wears a green dress, red cloak and a matronly veil and holds the figure of Christ in her lap, who reaches out towards His mother. The youthful Virgin stands beside Saint Anne and turns towards the Christ Child. The poses of the figures highlight the intimate character of the group.
The tips of the Virgin's thumbs lost. Minor wear to the polychromy. Losses due to insect damage to the lower section of the back. Mounted on a wooden base with a supporting beam on the reverse. Height 42.5 cm (without base).
