Probably Upper Rhine-Region second half 15th century

A wooden figure of the Virgin and Child, presumably Upper Rhine Region, second half 15th century

Carved in the round, the reverse only partially worked. With partially overpainted older polychromy. Depicting the Virgin standing in a gently swaying pose, designed for a slightly lowered viewpoint. She holds the Christ Child, shown holding a globe and with one hand held aloft in a blessing gesture, over Her hip. The figure's sculptural volume is largely defined by the drapery of the blue cloak, which falls in thick curving and vertical folds about the Virgin's body.
Two of the fingers of the Child's right hand lost. Wear and losses to the front left of the plinth. Height 52 cm.
