The beautiful youth Narcissus spurns the love of the nymph Echo and is punished by Aphrodite with insatiable love for himself. While drinking, he bends over a spring and falls in love with his own reflection. He becomes ever more consumed with longing and the unattainability of his love, until he is finally transformed into the narcissus flower that bears his name (Ovid, Metamorphoses).
