A very tall Ratanakosin figure of Buddha. Thailand. Early 19th century

Standing barefooted, the right hand hanging down, the left hand held in abhaymudra, the garment borders, the center and waist fold with flower patterns in relief and inlays of mirror glass. Covered with gilded brownish black lacquer, the eyes of mother-of-pearl, the eye pupils of glass. Crack to the upper left arm. Mounted.
Height 169.8 cm

The Buddha with his left hand raised in abhayamudra represents the "Buddha restraining the sandal wood image". Legend has it that a wooden statue of the Buddha wanted to rise out of respect when it was presented to the real Buddha, but the latter refused this act of reverence by raising his left hand.
