In his memoirs, Anton von Werner recalls the 30th birthday of his artist friend Gustav Osterroth, a pupil of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer in Karlsruhe: "...I had composed a song (...) adapted to the personage of the celebrated man, which I sang accompanied by guitar, while the maritime painter Fritz Sturm played the flute. The painter Reichmann presented our gifts, the sculptor Tendlau a mighty bouquet of plants fit for a landscape foreground." (Berlin 1993, op. cit., p. 198).
