A rare and early Meissen porcelain dog on its kennel

Smoothed base with blue crossed swords mark. A chip to the tail, one roof tile and the end of the bone restored. H 9.3, W 7.3, D c. 9 cm.
Model by Johann Joachim Kaendler, 1737, produced soon after.

Kaendler's workshop reports from February 1737 mention a model that corresponds to this design: "A dog's hut altered, and for this purpose 5 dogs poussiret in clay, as an old one lying on the hut and gnawing at a bone...". (in Pietsch, Die Arbeitsberichte des Meissener Porzellanmodelleurs Johann Joachim Kaendler 1706 - 1775, Leipzig 2002, p. 45).
