Adrian Zingg

Rocky Landscape with Castle Ruins and Waterfall

Pen in black and watercolour. 49.2 x 64.2 cm.
Framed under glass.

This magnificent but unsigned watercolour can be grouped stylistically and because of its subject with a collection of drawings by Adrian Zingg housed in the Albertina in Vienna as well as to a sheet in the Dresden Kupferstichkabinett ("Am Waldbach", inscribed "A. Zingg ad Nat. del 13. Oct. 1795"). These are larger watercolour drawings with similar mountain landscapes and waterfalls as well as comparable figures. Some of the Viennese drawings, which came from the collection of Albert von Sachsen-Teschen, are signed and dated to the 1780s (M. Grönig, M. L. Sternath: Die Deutschen und Schweizer Zeichnungen des späten 18. Jahrhunderts, (Bestandskatalog Albertina), Vienna 1997, no. 1023-1026). Compositionally, the drawing can also be associated with a copper engraving after Zingg from 1784, "Wasserfall aus dem Lieberthaler Grund".
