Jacob Philipp Hackert

Hiker in Rügen

Pen and wash in grey. 33 x 40 cm.
Signed lower right: J. P. Hackert Boldewitz.

In 1762, Adolf Friedrich von Olthof acquired the Boldevitz estate on the island of Rügen. Between 1762 and 1764, the young, largely unknown Jakob Philipp Hackert stayed at Boldevitz at Olthof's invitation and produced six large-scale landscape murals for the manor house.
It is possible that the lonely hiker is Olthof himself, whom the artist often accompanied on his walks. Two further drawings made in Boldevitz are housed in the Dresden Kupferstichkabinett.
