Gouache on leather in a leather frame. 33.2 x 24 cm (depiction), 51.4 x 41.3 cm (frame). Signed 'MLiebermann' (joined) in black lower right.

According to Margreet Nouwen, this work is an absolute exception in Liebermann's oeuvre. He painted this scene of lovers on a piece of leather at the request of his friend, the dentist Dr Josef Grünberg. It served as a portfolio cover for Grünberg's extensive collection of drawings and prints. Liebermann also painted the same motif in oil and had it printed as a lithograph (Eberle 1926/34 and Achenbach 114).
