A Strasbourg silver gilt salver made for Prince Montbazon

Oval tray with a moulded rim and raised border decorated with flower and ribbon reliefs. The centre monogrammed LA beneath a crown for Louis-Armand de Rohan, Prince de Montbazon (1732 - 1794). L 21; W 16.3 cm, weight 383 g.

Louis-Armand-Constantin de Rohan was the fifth child of the Duc de Montbazon and came from an influential family of the Ancient Regime. The naval officer was promoted to lieutenant general in 1770 and married Louise Rosalie Le Tonnelier de Breteuil the following year. Rohan died by guillotine on July 27th, 1794 after refusing to swear allegiance to the French Republic.
