A Neoclassical Lombard chest of drawers

Walnut, rosewood, poplar, maple and boxwood veneers on walnut, iron locks. Three-drawer cabinet on tapering veneered supports. The front and sides separated optically into two sections: A foliate frieze to the upper drawer, the two lower drawers with acanthus scrolls in bombé-form foliate surrounds. The angles accentuated by floral bands, the centre of the top with a round foliate reserve. Two probably later panels in the back. Minor warped veneer on the sides, several restored shrinkage cracks to the top. Some traces of earlier insect damage. The sabots lacking. The locks most likely origonal and reattached, the keys replaced.
Overall in good restored and well-kept condition. H 88.5, W 124, D 58.5 cm.
Milan, workshop of Giuseppe Maggiolini, late 18th C.

The proximity to Maggiolini's stylistic idiom in the second half of the 18th century is unmistakable. Multicoloured marquetry based on classical motifs covering all elements characterise Neoclassical furniture from Lombardy.

Provenance

From a South German private collection.
