A powerful boxwood netsuke of Shōki capturing an oni. 18th century

Half-kneeling, he pushes down an oni that he is about to tie-up in a tattered piece cloth, the oni's head and claws peeping out of the holes. Shōki's physical effort is reflected not only in his grimacing face with wind-blown beard, but also in the lively folds of his robe. Good age patina. Chip to one of the flaps of Shōki's hat, traces of use.
