A tall wood carving of an ashinaga. Late 19th century

The long-legged islander stands with feet together and holds in both raised hands an object that no longer exists. The head with bushy beard and locks of hair falling into the nape is carefully carved, around the hips he wears a rush apron from which hangs a pouch and into which is inserted a knife, of which only the handle is visible.
Height 11.5 cm

This is an unusual work by Hōshū (Yoshihide), who is regarded as a member of the Tōkoku school and became famous for his netsuke with coloured inlays.

Provenance
