An ivory netsuke of a giant foreigner with a small figure. 18th century

Standing and wearing garments with large engraved patterns, with a small gong hanging from his belt and holding a drumstick in his left hand, he supports on his shoulder a tiny Chinese man in a long split robe who tries to climb onto the giant's head. Very good age patina. Legs restuck.
Height 13.1 cm

The identification of this netsuke type, often described as giant and Wasōbyōe, can no longer be upheld. However, the story of Wasōbyōe published in 1774 post-dates this carving which on the basis of style and patina dates to the 18th century if not earlier.
