A good boxwood netsuke of a snail. 19th century

Emerging from its shell and bending back, the extended antennae lying flush on top of the wreathed shell and the slimy flesh part of the body forming the himotōshi. Signed Odawara jū Yoshiharu in ukibori. Chip.

There has been some discussion as to how to read the signature. Up to 1998 the signature was read Shigeharu 重春 as published by Lazarnick. The Barries Davies catalogue however argues that the signature should be read Yoshiharu 義治, which indeed seems more plausible.
