A dark stained boxwood netsuke of a snail. Nagoya. Mid-19th century

Emerging from its shell, the antennae resting flat on the surface, the mollusc’s slimy body realistically engraved with fine cross-hatching which contrasts with the delicate ribbing of the shell. Signature almost illegible, most probably reading: Hōgen Tadayoshi, rendered in ukibori in two adjacent rectangular reserves. One eye inlaid, the other inlay missing.
