A burnished bronze plaque with Friedrich II parading the troops

Inscribed below "FRIEDRICH DER ZWEITE KÖNIG VON PREUSSEN". With cast signature "G. MUELLER AKAD. KUENSTL. BERLIN" on the reverse. H 9.8, W 14.6 cm. In a fire-gilt metal frame (with various soldered repairs and minor holes) H 13, W 17.7 cm.
Berlin, 1830s/1840s, after Daniel Chodowiecki.

The gouache by Daniel Chodowiecki upon which this work is based, showing King Friedrich II riding off his guard battalion and dated 1772, is now in the Huis Doorn collection. It was acquired by Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1908. The motif was brought into circulation a few years after its creation (probably already in the 18th century) via prints.
The signature on the relief is most likely attributable to the sculptor Gottlieb Müller, who worked for the Königliche Eisengießerei Berlin as "Formerey-Vorsteher" and was responsible for several of the pieces featured at the Academy exhibitions (Schmidt, Der preußische Eisenkunstguss, Berlin 1982, p. 271).
