An oval Berlin KPM porcelain tureen and cover from the dinner service for Berlin Palace

Model no. 189. Original lid with finial formed as a kneeling putto pouring flowers from a cornucopia. Finely decorated with small bouquets and moths, the handles picked out in purple and aquamarine. Blue sceptre mark, impressed K and 13. Minor chips to the upper rim, below the handle and to the flowers. H 19, W 28 cm.
1768.

In January and February 1768, Frederick II commissioned his porcelain manufactory to produce a service of "36 table settings" for the Berlin Palace. It was to be "colourfully painted with naturalistic flowers and a few insects along with a golden border". The service was delivered in the same year, on 17th December. In March 1773, the service was supplemented by a subsequent delivery of "72 dinner plates etc.".
