Friedrich Otto Georgi

The Royal Tombs of Meroe

Watercolour. 24 x 36 cm.
Signed and dated lower right: Otto Georgi 1872 / Meroe.

In 1843, Georgi was commissioned by the Prussian government to accompany the expedition of the Berlin Egyptologist, archaeologist and linguist Richard Lepsius to Egypt, Nubia and Palestine as a draughtsman. This journey, which lasted until 1846, set the tone for his future artistic work. For two decades, he focussed almost exclusively on Oriental motifs and became one of the first German "Orientalists". With oasis scenes, the ruins of Luxor, oriental landscapes, cityscapes of Cairo, the pyramids on the Nile and Meroe, he was quickly successful and at the same time catered to the growing interest in exotic subjects in Germany.
