Heliopolis, the "City of the Sun", was an ancient Egyptian city on the outskirts of modern-day Cairo. According to ancient Egyptian belief, the world was created there. It is also the site of the mythological court of the sun god Re. Georgi's watercolour shows a desert landscape at sunset, in which the ruins of the temples appear like a mirage in the distance. Only the obelisk of Sesostris I and the enclosing walls from the 2nd-1st millennium BC can be identified.
