Henrick van Holt

A carved oak figure of St. Lawrence by Henrick van Holt, circa 1530/1540

Carved in the round, the reverse only summarily. Presumably formerly polychrome, with remains of ground. The surface retouched in dark brown.. A standing figure of the saint dressed in a heavy, fringed chasuble with trimmings in relief over a floor-length alb. He holds a book in his lowered left hand, but the griddle attribute which he previously held in his right hand is now lacking. The work can be attributed to Henrick van Holt via comparison with other sculptures securely attributed to this artist in the Lower Rhine Region, and dated to around 1530/1540.
Several vertical hairline cracks, primarily to the reverse. Minimal wear. Mounted on a flat wooden base. Height 94 cm (without base).

Provenance

From the estate of the sculptor Ferdinand Langenberg (1849-1931) in Goch. - Subsequently in family ownership.
