A Nuremberg silver medal commemorating the first Bavarian parliamentary assembly

Avers with a standing genius and a bust of King Maximilian Joseph of Bavaria inscribed "DES VOLKES GLÜCK MAXIMILIANS HÖCHSTER RUHM" (the people’s happiness Maximilian’s greatest fame). Reverse with an obelisk inscribed "HEIL UNSERN EDLEN STAENDEN" (blessing to our noble parliament) and "ZUM ANDENKEN AN DIE ERSTE STAENDEVERSAMLUNG ZU MÜNCHEN D:4. FEBRUAR 1819" (commemorating the first parliamentary assembly in Munich, 4 February 1819). Containing four double-sided paper roundels with hand-coloured copperplates depiciting towns in Bavaria. The inside of the lid and base with copperplates depicting the grand opening of the first parliamentary assembly and the entry of the members of parliament into the church of St. Michael. In a small, leather-bound box, also containing a 41-page booklet describing “the remarkable events of the year 1819”. Signed to avers "STETTNER": An exceptionally rare piece in impeccable condition. Diameter 5 cm.

The parliamentary assembly of the Kingdom of Bavaria was included in the Bavarian constitution in 1818. This parliament, organised according to social rank (“stände”), gathered for the first time on 4th February 1819 in the Redoutensaal in the newly renovated “ständehaus” on Prannergasse in Munich.
