A bronze figure of a pacing stallion

Hollow cast bronze on an ebonised wood plinth. Bronze H 51 cm, W ca. 48 cm. With base H ca. 64 cm.
France or Italy, late 18th / early 19th C.

The present work is based on Giovanni da Bologna's equestrian statue for Cosimo Medici I, which was erected on the Piazza della Signoria in Florence in 1594. The famous horse monument, both with and without the rider, were already reproduced in Giambologna's time, both by his studio and by Susini. The horse's pose, with its head pulled in towards its chest and its choreographed steps, was both a symbol of the nobility of the animal and also a metaphor for obedience to the prince.
